"As many would know, I have had challenges with my mental health for a number of years," he said.
"In recent weeks I have increasingly struggled and am currently working on my recovery with all the appropriate supports.
"I will be taking a period of leave to ensure I have the time and space to recover."
Mr Street said he intended to return to his ministerial duties in the coming weeks and thanked Premier Jeremy Rockliff and his government colleagues for their support.
"During my time in politics, I have not shied away from talking about mental health issues openly and honestly to help break down the stigma attached to them," he said.
"I have chosen to use my situation as an opportunity to be upfront with Tasmanians, and normalise this issue, just like any other health issue."
Deputy Premier Michael Ferguson, Roger Jaensch and Nick Duigan will share responsibilities over Mr Street's portfolios amongst them.
